ENQUIRE

The Asahi Shimbun Pub. Co.

Osaka and Tokyo: Asahi Shimbun, Shōwa 2 [1927]. First edition.

The catalogue for an extraordinary event held in Tokyo and Osaka in 1927, `The First International Photographic  Salon of Japan`. The Salon comprised `at least 1,000 photographic works from home and abroad, was held in the  exhibition hall of the Tokyo Asahi Building for two weeks ... [and afterwards] was transferred to Osaka`. The  catalogue includes 184 pages of black and white photographic illustrations of works in the exhibition, with one  work to each page and with captions in English and Japanese. In addition, five halftones of works have been  tipped-in to card leaves in the book. The works in the exhibition were submitted by photographers from around  the world, and the catalogue includes images by New Zealand photographer A.H. Eaton (`A Country Road`),  Sydney Camera Circle member Ishida Kiichirō, and Australian photographers Mont Luke, Cecil W. Bostock, and  Henri Mallard. A scarce record of the first international photographic salon held in Japan, illustrated with works  by famous photographers from many different countries.

Original wrappers, lightly soiled, corners and extremities lightly bumped. Text pages and card plates occasionally foxed. Small scrapes to extremities of some of the tipped-in plates. Occasional small marks to photographic plates, but overall plates near fine. 4 cm tear to p.175-176. Overall very good to near fine. 184, 4, [12] p. 26.5 x 19.5 cm. Text in English and Japanese.
