[Sansui Ryakugashiki (Guide to Drawing Landscapes Simply)]

[Kuwagata], Keisai [Kitao, Masayoshi; Keisai, Masayoshi] [illustrated by].

Naniwa [Ōsaka]: Fukusada Tōhē, Bunka 10 [1813].

A scarce edition of Keisai's "guide to drawing landscapes simply". In Sansui Ryakugashiki, renowned artist Keisai Masayoshi (1764-1824, also known as Kitao Masayoshi or Kuwagata Keisai) offers a range of half-, single-, and double-page illustrations of mountains and rivers in a captivating red and orange colour scheme. In his acclaimed text on Japanese illustrated books, Jack Hillier notes that no artist, not even excepting Hokusai, "shows such a Protean diversity of styles as Keisai Masayoshi" (The Art of the Japanese Book (1987), 465). The expression ryakugashiki in the title refers to abbreviated or simplified drawings, a style of Keisai's that would give him lasting fame. Fukusada Tōhē, the publisher of this particular edition of Keisai's work, is recorded to have published only one other book - Keisai's Gyokai Ryakugashiki (a reissue of his Tatsu-no-miya Tsuko), also in Bunka 10 (1813). A stunningly coloured printing of a famous Keisai work, in rich, earthy tones, and from a scarce edition.

One four-hole-bound (yotsumetoji) volume, complete, on double leaves, traditional East Asian binding style (fukurotoji). Presumed original wrappers worn, chipped, and lacking title slip. Title page lacking or never bound in. Pages lightly thumbed, with one or two very small marks. Light browning and creases. Minor offsetting from pigments. 30 leaves. 26.1 x 17.9 cm.
