Shuj Gi wo Mamorite Nan wo Manukaru ["A Master and Servant Observe Obedience to Their Duties and a Disaster is Averted"]

Ōju [Mizuno], Toshikata [illustrated by]; [Tominaga], Toshichika [corrected by].

Tōkyō: Tsuji Keiji: Fukyū sha, Meiji 21 [1888]. "Later printing".

A woodblock-printed supplement to the Nishiki-e Shūshindan ("Brocade Pictures for Moral Education") series of texts for primary school students. The books, produced by Fukyūsha, Yoshitoshi, and his students, collected moral stories from the West, China, and Japan. This particular illustration accompanies the sixth story in volume five, found on leaf nine, which relates the tale of a slave who refused to divulge the whereabouts of his master before a court. The master, who had escaped to another country, heard of the poor treatment of his loyal slave and returned to the court to plead for forgiveness. Impressed that the master would return to save his slave despite the danger to his own life, the court cleared the names of both the slave and the master.

One ōban leaf, complete. Light discolouration to extremities, a few small marks, tiny wormhole in the upper left, small sticker removals to verso. Part of the Nishiki-e Shūshindan series. 36 x 24.5 cm.
