Seiyō Chie Ita Zukai Tsuketaru Zu Tehon = Ninety New Moveable Puzzles

Itabe, Masashichi [translated by].

Ōsaka: [Kanshōdō], Meiji 10 [1877].

An illustrated introduction to Western-style movable puzzles for Japanese readers, with explanatory notes. The puzzles in this book may have been derived from Chinese tangrams, which in turn are thought to have been inspired by Japanese Shōnagon no Ita puzzles. The book which prompted the publication of this edition, Ninety New Moveable Puzzles, was published in London by Joseph, Myers, & Co. in the 1850-60s. This Japanese edition features twelve full-page illustrations of puzzles from the original text.

One volume, complete, on double leaves, fukurotoji style. Original wrappers, lightly soiled and worn, with presumed original daisen (mounted title piece). Occasional small wormholes and marks to text. Name of the translator/publisher blacked out in the colophon. 3, [7] leaves. 13.2 x 19 cm.
