[Untitled Menuki]
[Higashiyama, (Kyōto)?: workshop unidentified, ca. Edo period (17th to mid-19th century)].
A metal menuki (fitting for a sword hilt) in the shape of three Japanese books, two with yotsumetoji (four-hole) bindings and one with a musubitoji (yamatotoji) stabbinding. The mounted daisen title of the stab-bound volume reads Nagauta (長唄), identifying it as a music book. A small carved inscription on the underside of the menuki reads 'Higashiyama' (東山), probably the area of Kyoto where the fitting was made.
One menuki, complete. Underside rusted. Small losses to metallic inlay. 4 x 1 cm.
