An issue of the Hansei Zasshi, "a monthly magazine in English, edited by Japanese". The editors pledge in their foreword to "represent the affairs of things in this country as it really is, to the foreign reading community at large". The articles feature occasional illustrations and include titles such as "Sur le Developpment des Idees philosophiques au Japon avant l'introduction de la Civilisation europeenne", "The Story of Ekasringa", "Monoceros, the Rishi" and "Sculpture and Metal Work of the Ancient Japanese". Agents including Otto Harrassowitz, E.J. Brill, The Open Court Publishing Co., F.P. Corkill (of New Plymouth, New Zealand), Kelly and Walsh, H.W. Churchill (of Foochow, China), and others are listed as contacts for parties interested in submitting subscription applications. The advertisements in the issue promote the Japan Times, Keinen Kwacho Gwafu, the publisher S. Nishimura ("...orders filled with care and promptitude"), the booksellers Luzac & Co., the journal The Far East: An Exponent of Japanese Thoughts and Affairs, The T'oung Pao (通報) published by E.T. Brill and later to be edited by Paul Pelliot, and sellers of ivory, fabrics, antiques, watches, rings, and pottery. A scarce copy complete with a colour woodblock-printed frontispiece by Tsukioka Kōgyo (1869-1927), a pupil of Ogata Gekkō and the adopted son of Tsukioka Yoshitoshi.

 

Vol. XIII, No. 1. Original stab-bound wrappers, extremities soiled and with losses, only lower binding string visible from lower wrapper. Occasional small internal marks and stains. Loss to upper opening corner of all leaves and lower foot of p. 40 onward. Minor occasional discolouration. [2] p., [1] fold-out colour woodblock-printed illustration, 48 p., [12] p. of ads. 23.9 x 17 cm. Text in English and French. Comes with one issue (loss to upper wrapper) of the Japanese edition of the journal.
