Collection de Pelliot, Manuscrits de Touen-houang

[Transcriber/s and annotator/s unidentified].

[S.l.: s.n., ca. early 20th century].

Possibly a typescript draft of the catalogue of the Pelliot Collection of Chinese, Sanskrit, Tibetan, and Uighur fragments and manuscripts discovered in China's Dunhuang caves (or 'Mogao Grottoes') by the French sinologist Paul Pelliot (1878-1945) in the early 1900s. The catalogue is in four sections: items 2001 to 2520, 2521 to 2614, 2615 to 3511, and 4500 to 4521. The titles and catalogue numbers have been typed or printed on one side of each leaf in French with spaces left for manuscript titles, place names, traditional year names, names, and other details in Chinese. While the annotator is unidentified, the quality of the characters indicates a native or nearnative level of Chinese. The content of the annotations suggests that the annotator observed the texts in person, although some spaces left for Chinese titles and names have been left blank. A few of the manuscript titles also use Japanese characters. From 1920 until 1942, Pelliot worked as a co-editor and occasional editor of the sinological journal T'oung Pao. His collection is currently held by the Bibliothèque nationale de France.

One volume, in presumed original half-buckram marbled boards. Board extremities rubbed and bumped, starting to loosen, losses to spine, tear to lower pastedown. Endpapers browned, leaves foxed. Manuscript annotations. 117 p., with mistakes in pagination. 26.9 x 21.2 cm. Text in French, Chinese, and Japanese.
