Naimono-zukushi ["A Compilation of Things That Aren't"]

[Author/s unidentified].

[Japan: publisher unidentified, ca. late Edo period (1820-50s?)].

A "collection of things that aren't"; each line of text ends with nai, a negative form of a verb or an auxiliary verb and adjective indicating the lack or non-existence of something. For example, one line reads seiyō no atama ni make ga nai ("there aren't topknots on foreigners' heads"). It is unclear whether double entendres are also being used. Prints such as these show elements of both kazoe-uta booklets and banzuke; they could easily be folded into booklets and bound, displayed as-is, or rolled into scrolls. An interesting compilation in a format similar to that of kazoe-uta.

Two issues, complete, in two loose leaves. Light wear and creases. Ink marks made during printing. Each issue measures approximately 11.1 x 29.5 cm.
