Kintaichō ["A gathering of brocade bags"]
Shimomura, Gyokukō [Tamahiro] [illustrated by].
Kyōto: Honda Ichijirō; Gōmei Gaisha Unsōdō, Taishō 10 [1921].
An album of designs for pouches made from brocade fabrics. Such pouches, shifuku, were used in the tea ceremony for tea containers, tea bowls, and other utensils. The colourful pouches were designed by Shimomura Gyokukō (also known as Shimomura Tamahiro (1878-1926)), a Kyoto-born artist and the founder of the Kyoto Design Association (京都図案協会). The work includes a double-page poem and a double-page preface followed by ten double-page illustrations of 36 colour woodblock-printed objects. Since the preface mentions yūzen and Shimomura exhibited dyeing patterns at the St. Louis World's Fair (Louisiana Purchase Exposition) in 1904, it seems likely that the designs in this work were meant for yūzen dyeing, one of Kyoto's most famous crafts.
