Inpu ["Book of seals"]
[Artist illegible].
[Japan, Meiji 23-24 (1890-91)]. Manuscript.
A manuscript of over one hundred tippedin designs for company and product label seals. The first 48 illustrations are for basic designs, probably to be shown to customers as a catalogue. The designs that follow feature the names of stores and products (such as souvenirs, foods, and beverages), suggesting they were commissioned by customers or designed as calligraphic samples to show to customers. Several stamp-printed samples for the brand "Baisen-an" (presumably the Kyoto-based fan dealer Miyawaki Baisen-an) are included, as are sample manuscript designs for date stamps. A carefully assembled manuscript showcasing a creative range of sizes, shapes, and calligraphic styles for seals.
One three-hole wrap-bound (hōhaisō) volume, complete, on double leaves, traditional East Asian binding style (fukurotoji). Original leaves bound in contemporary wrappers, lightly creased and worn. General soiling, creases, and small marks to text. Calligraphy to folded inner side of last leaf. Unpaged (5 unnumbered leaves). 28.2 x 20.3 cm
