Miyako fūzoku kewaiden ["Cosmetic customs of the capital"]

Sayama, Hanshichimaru [text by]; Hayami, Shungyōsai [illustrated by].

[Japan: publisher unidentified, preface dated Bunka 10 (1813)].

A complete set of Japan's most famous beauty manual, featuring tips on makeup, grooming, haircare, hairstyles, skincare, fashion, hygiene, gait, posture, and other beauty-related topics. Techniques used by the women of Kyoto to make a round face look long, big eyes look small, the space between eyebrows and eyes look larger, a big mouth look smaller, and so on and so forth are discussed at length, as are recipes for hair and skin treatments. The set, highly illustrated with diagrams and double-page spreads, is the most widely known work of Shungyōsai (1767-1823), a student of Gyokuzan.

Three four-hole (yotsutoji) binding, complete, on double leaves, traditional East Asian binding style (fukurotoji). Original wrappers, worn, soiled, and scraped; mounted daisen panels present. Occasional internal marks to volumes 1 and 2. Two ex-ownership stamps to first leaf of volume 2, ex-ownership nameplate tipped-in to upper pastedown. Inscriptions and stamps to volume 3 pastedowns, one marginal stamp to first leaf, inscription to margin of leaf 14. Occasional wormholes to volume 3, one continuous 5 cm wormhole to last 11 leaves. Volume 3 is from a different, probably earlier, printing to the first two volumes. Housed in non-original custom slipcase. [5], 30; [1], 30; [1], 31 leaves. 25.2 x 17.5 cm.
