Odoke Jitsugokyō: irozato machijū anazukushi, shohen ["A witty Jitsugokyō: all sorts of tales from around the pleasure quarters, first part"]
[Author unidentified].
[Japan: publisher unidentified], Tenpō 2 [1831].
The Jitsugokyō ("Teachings of the words of truth") was a textbook on morality used for learning kanji and kanbun (literary Sinitic) at terakoya schools in the Edo period. The twentytwo maxims featured on this large woodblockprinted banzuke sheet recount customs of the pleasure quarters in humorous Sinitic "proverbs", each accompanied by explanatory text in the vernacular. Although the title records the print as the "first part", no other parts were located in Japanese databases, and it is possible none were published.
One woodblock-printed leaf, complete. Folds (split in places), soiling, one small wormhole, and light stains. Leaf backed with washi paper. 34.5 x 44.5 cm.
