Yo no shirabe ["Night melody"]

Yūgō, Bikutoru [Hugo, Victor] [lyrics by]; Gunō, Sharuru [Gounod, Charles-François] [composed by]; Matsubara, Chikashi [arranged by]; [artist unidentified].

Tōkyō: Bikutā Shuppansha, Shōwa 6 [1931].

A Japanese harmonica score for Charles-François Gounod's Sérénade, which featured as its lyrics Victor Hugo's poem of the same title. Gounod (1818-1893) is perhaps most famed for composing the opera Faust, which was first performed in 1859. This edition of Sérénade, with Japanese lyrics, has been furnished with colourful Art Nouveau wrappers in a style similar to that of Takehisa Yumeji (1884-1934). In beautiful condition.

One music score with one loosely inserted leaf (two pages), complete. Browning, light fading to extremities. Corners slightly bumped. Number 26 of the Bikutā hāmonika chō tokusen gakufu series. 26.5 x 19 cm.
