[Minoya kasaya hana no yukifuri ("A straw raincoat shop and an umbrella store: a snowfall of flowers")]
[Tōzaian], Nanboku [text by]; Utagawa, Toyokuni [illustrated by].
[Edo (Tōkyō)]: Kansendō [Izumiya Ichibē], Kinotoi [1815].
A gōkan penned by the block-cutter, ukiyo-e artist, kyōka poet, and gesaku author Tōzaian Nanboku (d. 1827) and illustrated by Utagawa Toyokuni I (1769-1825). The story seems to be a take on the famous tale of the tragic lovers Akaneya Hanshichi and Minoya Sankatsu, now featuring the giant octopus Imohachi. The handwritten daisen title panel erroneously reads Shiki no asobi ("Pleasures of the four seasons"). Despite the advertisement on the lower pastedown for a part two, no records of any later parts were located. A little-studied collaboration between a major gesaku author and a famed artist.
One four-hole-bound (yotsutoji) volume, complete, on double leaves, traditional East Asian binding style (fukurotoji). Wrappers possibly original; original mounted title panel (daisen) lacking. Leaves reinforced with washi; fukurotoji unopenable. Small stains, thumbing, wear to leaves. "First part" but presumed all published. 30 leaves. 17.9 x 12.3 cm.
