Naniwa miyage ["Souvenirs from Naniwa"]
Nanritei, Kiraku ... [et al.] [text by]; Akatsuki, Kanenaru ... [et al.] [illustrated by].
Ōsaka: Kawachiya Heishichi, [ca. late Edo period (1850s?)].
A complete set of the first series of Souvenirs from Naniwa, a collection of satirical prints, many illustrated, that typically list or rank people, food, alcohol, courtesans, professions, wealth, and a plethora of other topics and attributes. These mitate banzuke ("ranking standings") emerged from the ephemeral culture of sumō banzuke - woodblock-printed rankings of sumō wrestlers based on tournament results. Some of the prints in Souvenirs from Naniwa also include information the reader may have considered helpful, like the names of medicine dealers, charms for healing illnesses, and the names of famous people and stores of the Naniwa area (present-day Osaka), while many others feature wordplay, puns, and word games. The set comes together with four volumes of the five-volume Azuma miyage ("Souvenirs from the East", postscript dated Kaei 5 [1852]), a similar work by the writer Kunkunbō. A fascinating repository of information about popular culture in the late Edo period.
First series of Souvenirs from Naniwa in five volumes, complete, together with four volumes from the five-volume Souvenirs from the East. Five decchōsō (butterfly-bound) volumes, complete, together with four concertina-bound (orijō) volumes. Occasional internal marks, stains, ex-ownership notes, and stamps. Moderate wormholing to Naniwa volumes; severe wormholing to Azuma volumes, repaired in some places. Naniwa volumes: [30; 30; 30; 30; 30 (including one postscript) double-page spreads]. Azuma volumes: [20 (including one preface); 20; 19; 20 (including one postscript) double-page spreads]. Each Naniwa volume measures approximately 17.7 x 12 cm; each Azuma volume measures approximately 18 x 12.3 cm.
