Miyako nishiki ["Brocades of the capital"]

[Ueno, Seikō (illustrated by)?].

Kyōto: Honda Ichijirō, Meiji 32 (1899)].

A collection of inventive designs by an unidentified artist or artists, previously owned by the acclaimed designer and artist Ueno Seikō (1871-1943). The woodblocks for the prints were carved by Kinoshita Yūnosuke and printed by Sekika Ishimatsu; the resulting prints were published by Honda Ichijirō (the founder of Unkindō) and distributed by Chōseidō. In the same year these prints were published, Honda Ichijirō published Seikō moyo hyakushu, a series of kimono designs created by Ueno Seikō and, like Miyako nishiki, produced with blocks carved by Kinoshita and printed by Sekika. Many of the prints for Seikō moyō hyakushu feature a colophon in their margin, providing the publication date April, Meiji 32 (1899); those of Miyako nishiki give the date February, Meiji 32 (1899), two months earlier. It seems possible that the artist or one of the artists of Miyako nishiki was Seikō. This is supported by the fact that one of the two copies traced in OCLC (one at the UCSB Library and the other at Japan's NDL), namely, the NDL copy, has Seikō moyō hyakushu and Miyako nishiki bound together in one volumē. The NDL copy features nine prints from Miyako nishiki, only five of which overlap with the prints featured in this copy. As each of the Miyako nishiki (and Seikō moyō hyakushu) prints has its own colophon (and because the prints in the NDL copy and this one differ), it is possible that the prints were published individually, perhaps as a subscription series rather than as a bound volume. This copy displays the ex-ownership signature, seal, and private library sticker of Seikō. Seikō worked closely with Unsōdō and Unkindō in the Meiji period, illustrating Ama no hagoromo, Hana no kage, Yachigusa, Shiki moyō, Miyako no hikari, and many other important works. An extremely scarce zuan album, with excellent provenance.

Twenty-one double-page prints in one gajōtoji (leaf versos affixed, spine covered) album. Bound in contemporary wrappers, title and ex-ownership notes handwritten (presumably by Seikō), ex-ownership seal and private library sticker of Seikō to upper. Soiling, discolouration, and stains to boards. Losses to spine, textblock firm. Light creases, marks, offsetting, and browning to prints. Slight oxidisation to metallic pigments. Occasional tears to gutters. [21 unnumbered double-page illustrations]. 24.8 x 18 cm.
