Bikō zukan ["A mirror of beautiful crafts"]
Hasegawa, Keika [illustrated by].
Ōsaka: Aoki Tsunesaburō (Aoki Sūzandō), Meiji 27 [1894].
A complete two-volume set of colour woodblock-printed patterns designed by the painter Hasegawa Keika (act. 1892-1905). The one hundred patterns included would presumably have been designed for textiles and hand-crafted products. Keika's most famous work is undoubtedly Keika hyakkiku, a set of delicately woodblock-printed illustrations of chrysanthemums published by Unsōdō in 1893. Bikō zukan highlights Keika's prowess as a graphic designer as well as an artist, showing his ability to work in a completely different style to that displayed in Keika hyakkiku.
Two stab-bound (musubitoji) volumes, complete, on double leaves, traditional East Asian binding style (fukurotoji). Original wrappers, with light wear, marks, and ink stains. Ties of upper volume presumably replaced. Pastedown of upper volume lacking. Light thumbing, occasional marks, and creases to illustrated leaves. Small loss to the lower opening corner of the second to last leaf of the first volume. [15; 14 unnumbered leaves]. Each volume measures approximately 15 x 21.9 cm.
