[A child's jinbaori coat decorated with peaches and crests]
[Creator unidentified].
[Japan, ca. Edo period (17th to mid-19th century)?].
A child's decorative surcoat or overcoat for use outdoors, with kamon crests sewn on the back. The cute peach design on the front alludes to the popular tale of Momotaro, and this design and the jacket's size indicate that it was made for a child. Jinbaori, a type of haori modeled on Portuguese campaign jackets introduced in the Muromachi period, were worn by samurai over their armour but later became popular as decorative overcoats. A nice example of an Edo period jinbaori for a child, with central ties featuring metal studs.
One jinbaori. Central folds, considerable wear. A few stains, mainly to collar and shoulder pads. Fabric worn flat in several places. Losses to outer layers of kamon crests, leaving only the under-layer in places. Threads frayed. Collar to base measures 57 cm; rightmost fold to leftmost measures 54.5 cm.
