Hashimoto, Chūgo [photography and printing by].
[Ishikawa]: Ishikawa Kenritsu Kōgyō Gakkō, [preface dated 1926].
A set of 156 photographic plates of textile, furniture, and ceramic designs from across the world. According to the preface, the headmaster of the industrial school that produced the set (Ishikawa Kenritsu Kōgyō Gakkō) was inspired to create the work after a trip to Europe in the spring of 1926. The title panel tipped-in to one of the folders housing the plates indicates the illustrations were reproduced from three works: Encyclopedie de l'ornament, La sculpture decorative moderne, and Ceramique orientale. One of the three groups of plates has French captions, another Japanese, and the last, none. An interesting collection that reflects the important role of ancient and modern European art in design education in early twentieth-century Japan.
Three collections of photographic plates, housed in original card folders. It is unclear whether the sets are complete due to a lack of numbering and the presence of numerous duplicate plates. Browning, light occasional foxing, and marks to leaves. A few small chips to extremities. Folds, small tears, light foxing, and browning to folders. Partial loss to one tie of one folder. Printer's details stamped and tipped-in to lower (inner) folder boards. [50; 56; 50] leaves. 21 x 15.3 cm.
