Kachi-Kachi Mountain

ENQUIRE

Kachi-Kachi Mountain

Hiro, Kodō [Japanese indirectly translated by]; Thompson, David [English translation by].

Tōkyō: Hiro Kodō, Hasegawa Takejirō, Meiji 20 [1887].

A supplement to issue 1,219 of Eiri Jiyū Shinbun featuring the translation of Kachi-Kachi Yama originally used in one of Hasegawa Takejirō's famous chirimenbon (crepe-paper books). The text is printed in three scripts: vernacular Japanese, kakikudashi kanbun, and English. The supplement was probably produced for Japanese children and/or adult students of English. The work is described in the title panel as the gehen (second part); the story is nonetheless complete. The "first part" probably featured the translation of Momotaro also advertised in the title panel.

One loose sheet, folded. Small holes to folds and creases. Loss to one corner, not affecting English text. Occasional stains, chips, and contemporary annotations. Paper slightly browned and foxed. 24.3 x 17.7 cm when folded. Text in English and Japanese.
