[An album of match labels]
Oda, Shūichi ... [et al] [commissioned by].
[Japan: privately published, ca. Shōwa 2-10 (1927-35)].
An album of tipped-in match labels produced in the 1920s and '30s when Japan's match label-collecting fad was at its peak. Most of the labels are woodblock-printed and have been produced in themed sets showcasing foreign travel, skeletons, famous people (including Charlie Chaplin and George Washington), beautiful women, popular places in Tokyo, kabuki scenes, and so on. The majority seem to have been commissioned by the prolific match label collector and connoisseur Oda Shūichi. Others have been created as advertisements for businesses and have evidently been acquired individually by the album's compiler.
One volume of tipped-in prints featuring over 400 labels, complete, on double leaves, traditional East Asian binding style (fukurotoji). Original wrappers very slightly worn, two labels tipped-in to upper, one to lower. Minor creases to album leaves. Occasional mild foxing and stains to labels. [20 leaves]. 31 x 22.2 cm.
