Reishin Gajō ["Album of Beautiful New Illustrations"]
Matsui, Yūkoku, [Furuya, Kōrin] [illustrated by].
Kyōto: Honda Ichijirō, Honda Shoten, Meiji 33 [1900].
A complete two-volume set of colour woodblock-printed designs by the little-known artist Matsui Yūkoku (fl. 1900s, sometimes read Matsui Yoshitani). The set contains a total of 51 illustrations, 50 of which were designed by Yūkoku. The remaining fold-out illustration was designed by the acclaimed artist Furuya Kōrin (1875-1910). The albums house a highly creative array of designs featuring umbrellas, a post box, butterflies, sparrows, cranes, lanterns, fireworks, stationary, a magic lantern and its slides, snow, landscapes, chrysanthemums, a scene from a kabuki play, and so on. Many of the illustrations demonstrate the use of woodblock printing techniques like karazuri (blind-embossing) and the application of special materials like metallic pigments and gofun (oyster shell pigment). All of the illustrations are provided with titles in the one-leaf index. No copies traced outside of Japan in OCLC.
Two stab-bound (musubitoji) volumes, complete, on double leaves, traditional East Asian binding style (fukurotoji). Original wrappers lightly worn and soiled, extremities slightly chipped. One partial tear and general wear to creases of fold-out illustration. Very minor occasional marks and light browning internally. All but one tissue guard present. One tissue guard torn, one with minor loss. [2 leaves, 1 folding illustrated p., 12 illustrated leaves; 13 illustrated leaves, 1 leaf]. Each volume measures approximately 25.5 x 18 cm.
