Kyōka Zuan ["Designs from the Capital"]

Hasegawa, Keika, Furuya, Kōrin [illustrated by].

Kyōto: Yamada Naosaburō, Yamada Unsōdō, Meiji 31-38 [1898-1905].

A complete collection of stunning textile designs by Hasegawa Keika (act. 1892-1905) and Furuya Kōrin (1875–1910). The creative illustrations, many of which reimagine traditional Japanese motifs, feature the prolific use of metallic pigments and a masterful use of juxtaposing colours. The seven volumes were published in three parts - the first part (two volumes in blue wrappers), the kōhen (the latter part; two volumes in light green wrappers), and the zokuhen (the 'sequel' part; three volumes in pink wrappers). Kōrin illustrated the second volume of the first part; all remaining volumes were illustrated by Keika. The kōhen and zokuhen copies in this set were both published in April of Meiji 38, one month after the first printings. These two parts feature designs that allude to the 1904-5 Russo-Japanese War, which was in progress during publication. Sometimes the title of the work is transcribed as Keika Zuan, referencing the name of the artist. Complete sets of this monumental work are increasingly difficult to find.

Seven four-hole-bound (yotsumetoji) volumes, complete, on double leaves, traditional East Asian binding style (fukurotoji). Original wrappers worn and soiled, with ex-ownership stamps, pencil and pen marks, and creases. Occasional foxing, browning, marks, stains (predominantly to endpapers), pencil and pen notes, and ex-ownership stamps internally. Some fukutoroji split. Textblock extremities a little bumped. The pink zokuhen comes with its original colour woodblock-printed envelope (folded). Housed in non-original custom chitsu folding case. First v. of first part: 24 x 16.1 cm; second v. of first part: 24.1 x 16.6 cm; kōhen: 24.4 x 17.9 cm; zokuhen: 24.2 x 16.6 cm. [2, 20]; [1, 20]; [1, 20]; [20]; [20]; [19]; [20] leaves.
