Tōshitsu ["Ceramics and Lacquerware"]
Nakamura, Shūho [illustrated by].
Kyōto: Gōmei Gaisha Unsōdō, Meiji 43 [1910].
An album of twenty double-page spreads of colour woodblock-printed designs for ceramics and lacquerware, by Nakamura Shūho. Shūho is described in the preface as a "graduate of the design department of the Kyoto School of Arts and Crafts". Little else is known about him but that he made several contributions to the influential Kyōto Zuan magazine. Metallic pigments have been used liberally in the prints, many of which showcase Art Nouveau designs for vases, cups, and bowls. Although the upper wrapper suggests the work was the "upper volume" (or "first volume"), no records of later volumes were traced in OCLC or major Japanese library databases.
One gajōsō (concertina-folding) volume, complete. Original boards, lightly soiled, extremities worn and chipped, light ex-ownership stamps to lower. Browning, offsetting, minor marks, and minor occasional foxing internally. Wormholes to endpapers, preface, and occasionally to extremities. Discolouration to gutters. Ex-ownership stamp to colophon, sticker to lower pastedown. [22] leaves. 25 x 18.3 cm.
