Seihō Ippinshū ["A Collection of Masterpieces by Seihō"]

Takeuchi, Seihō [illustrated by]

Kyōto: Unsōdō, Shōwa 12 [1937].

The first series, featuring 31 prints, of Seihō Ippinshū, a collection of designs by the highly acclaimed nihonga painter Takeuchi Seihō (1864-1942). Produced by Unsōdō under Seihō's supervision just a few years before the artist's death, Seihō Ippinshū was originally published in instalments for subscribers. The book format was an option created after the instalments had been completed. The printing techniques used in the first series include colour woodcuts (of which there are nineteen), collotypes, and photographically produced prints (some of which were remarkably sophisticated for the 1930s). This bound set of the first series features large-format illustrations of landscapes, flowers, birds, fish, and other objects and themes, and is scarce, as the woodblocks for the prints were destroyed in the firebombing of Tokyo in 1945. The production was famously extolled for its innovative use of printing techniques by both Roger Keyes and Jack Hillier in Ehon: The Artist and the Book in Japan (2006) and The Art of the Japanese Book (1987) respectively.

First series. One stab-bound volume, complete. Presumed original cloth-covered wrappers, with original daisen title slip present. Chips to daisen and upper margin of upper board. Creases and occasional holes to tissue guards. Occasional browning, foxing, and marks to prints, as usual, mainly to collotypes. [31] tipped-in illustrations. 48.1 x 41.9 cm.
