Edo no Hana Meishō-e ["The Flowers of Edo: A Collection of Famous Places"]
[Utagawa], Kunisada [II], [Utagawa], Toyokuni [III], Seisei [Kawanabe], Kyōsai [illustrated by].
[Edo (Tōkyō)]: Katō Sei [Katōya Seibei], [ca. Bunkyū 3 (1863)].
A harimaze print featuring three panels: the top panel, of a woman carrying a bentō box under cherry blossoms in Ueno, is illustrated by Kunisada II (1823-1880); the left panel, of the shushikizakura cherry blossom tree at Kiyomizu Kannondō in Ueno, is by Kyōsai (1831-1889); the right panel, of the onnagata actor Sawamura Tanosuke, is by Toyokuni III (1786-1865). Production of the series of seventy prints was headed by Kunisada (Toyokuni III) and involved the collaboration of twenty-one notable artists of the Edo period. Highlights of this particular print, which is subtitled hachiban-gumi (eighth group), include the extremely fine carving and printing of the hair of the onnagata actor and the visibility of the woodgrain in the background of the same panel.
One leaf, woodblock-printed on one side. Slight soiling to extremities, browning, and a few wormholes. Light creases. 36.5 x 25 cm.
