A set of four hoods, one pair of gloves, and one jacket used by firemen working in Setagaya, Tokyo. The items, which probably date from the late nineteenth to early twentieth century, were made using sashiko hand embroidery and aizome indigo dyeing. The heavy clothing could be doused in water to protect the wearer from embers. Collections of such garments are scarce.
Four headpieces, one set of gloves, and one jacket. Occasional browning, stains, marks, and scrapes. Hoods measures approx. 68 x 42 cm, coat measures approx. 111 x 124 cm, gloves measure approx. 46 x 17.5 cm.
