Ōiri ["Full House"]
Kubo, [first name illegible] [produced by]; Sogai [illustrated by?].
Kōbe: Shinyūren, [ca. Taishō to early Shōwa period (1910-30s)?].
A set of six woodblock-printed match labels featuring illustrations possibly associated with kabuki or another form of traditional performance. The term ōiri (大入) which appears on each of the match cards and the envelope has a range of meanings but may be related in this case to ōiri-bukuro: "celebratory bags" of money and gifts handed out to theatre staff when a performance gained a particularly high attendance. The text on each card records the name Kubo - the individual who produced the set for the Kōbe-based Shinyūren group of match card enthusiasts. The names of other sponsors of the set (or perhaps members of the Shinyūren) are printed on the back of the envelope. The use of bokashi gradation indicates a high level of attention paid to detail on the part of the producer.
One woodblock-printed envelope + six woodblock-printed cards, complete. Light browning to envelope and cards, creases to envelope. Each card measures approximately 6.7 x 4.8 cm. Envelope measures 10.7 x 6 cm when folded.
