Shochū O-utagai ["Summer Greetings"]
Oda, [Hidekazu] [produced by].
[Tōkyō]: Oda [Hidekazu], Shōwa 8 [1933].
A set of twelve woodblock-printed matchbox-sized cards featuring fans illustrated with summer flowers. The text on each card records the name Oda - the individual who produced the set for an unidentified group of matchbox card enthusiasts. Oda's full name (Oda Hidekazu) is revealed by the address on the envelope clipping that accompanies the set. Oda Hidekazu was perhaps the most prolific producer and collector of privately-printed matchbox cards in Japan in the early twentieth century. The bokashi gradation used in the cooling river design on the title print is a nice touch.
One woodblock-printed envelope + twelve woodblock-printed cards, complete. Light browning to envelope and cards, creases to envelope. Address clipping present. Each card measures approximately 6 x 4.2 cm; envelope measures 10.8 x 6.3 cm when folded.
