[Kyōka Momochidori ("A Flock of Kyōka Poems")]
[Yanagawa, Shigenobu (illustrated by)]; Shakuyakutei, [Nagane] [preface by].
[Japan: publisher unidentified, ca. 1830s?].
A book of kyōka poems illustrated by Hokusai's pupil and son-in-law Yanagawa Shigenobu (1787–1832), who was known for his surimono and book illustrations. This album features thirty double-page spreads of illustrations of beautiful women by Shigenobu alongside poems by various composers. The preface was provided by the famed kyōka poet and occasional gesaku author Shakuyakutei Nagane (Kisanji II, 1767-1845). Shakuyakutei was a leader of poetry groups including the Sugawararen and a descendant of the artist and craftsman Hon'ami Kōetsu (1558-1637). It is likely that he was responsible for selecting the poems published in this work. Shigenobu's illustrations accompanying the poems feature occasional karazuri blind-embossing, but the true highlight is the vibrant blue and orange hues used by the printer. Additionally, the ex-owner has re-bound the leaves in a yokohon (horizontal-book) format, allowing the reader to enjoy the illustrations as full scenes, like ukiyo-e prints. While this album lacks the colophon and initial single-page illustration (which resembles a frame and does not include any text), all thirty double-page illustrations are present. An interesting feature of this copy is that two double-page spreads do not feature any text - the poems present in the same illustrations in other copies have, for some reason, not been printed. One of these spreads features the short ex-ownership inscription of Yabu Mansaku of Awaji Island. Copies with all thirty double-page scenes are few and far between. A scarce ehon finely printed in eye-catching hues.
One concertina-bound (orijō) volume, lacking colophon and single illustrated page. Non-original wrappers worn, with losses to extremities. Leaves backed on binding card. Thumbing, small marks, stains, and light soiling internally. Two spreads with large but light central stains. Oxidisation to metallic pigments. [1, 30 double-page spreads]. 20.8 x 28.2 cm.
