[Draft illustrations for Onna Irezumi-shi ("The Woman Tattoo Artist")]
[Shimizu, Miezō (illustrated by)].
[Japan, ca. Shōwa 25 (1950)]. In manuscript.
A set of 190 draft illustrations by Shimizu Miezō (1893-1962) for the serial novel Onna Irezumi-shi ("The Woman Tattoo Artist") by Kunieda Kanji (1892-1956). The serial ran across 201 issues of the Sangyō Keizai Shinbun newspaper between March and September of 1950. This set includes 190 of the 201 illustrations. In most of the illustrations, sketches in pencil have been outlined with ink and then corrected with white pigment and papers layered over the original illustration. A fascinating set of images telling the story of a woman in a traditionally male-dominated profession.
Collection of 190 illustrations (of a presumed total of 201: 15, 54, 96, 101, 150, 162, 171, 173, 186, 191, and 201 lacking). Illustrations mounted on thin card. Browning, light occasional stains, creases, foxing, and marks. Each illustration (without mounting) measures approximately 21 x 15.3 cm.
