[Untitled collection of six uchiwa-e]
Suzuki, Kiitsu, [Shibata], Zeshin, [Takahashi], Ōshin [illustrated by].
[Japan: publisher unidentified, ca. late Edo to early Meiji period (1850-70s?)].
A collection of six woodblock-printed uchiwa-e (fan prints) featuring seasonal plants and flowers including irises, maple leaves, and gourds. The prints featuring irises, by Rinpa artist Suzuki Kiitsu (1796-1856), would have been used as the recto and verso of a fan produced for spring. The recto is signed and sealed, while the full bloom irises appear on the verso. The two prints by Takahashi Ōshin (1855-1901) of autumn leaves would have similarly been used for both sides of a single fan. Ōshin also produced the peony fan print in the lower left. The print featuring the praying mantis and gourds in the lower right was designed by Shibata Zeshin (1807-1891), Ōshin's teacher. A small but beautiful collection of well-preserved woodblock-printed uchiwa-e.
Six single leaves, each woodblock-printed on one side. Slight browning, very minor soiling to extremities. A few small wormholes, repaired with washi backing. Central fold to Zeshin fan. Each fan measures approximately 21 x 27 cm.
