Tōga Hitorigeiko [Modern Illustration for Solo Study]
[Kijakusai (?) (preface by)].
Fushimi: Kameya Hanbē, Kōka 5 [1848].
A "teach yourself painting" book for beginners, featuring information on topics including the necessary pigments and implements, the different grips for brushes, the effects given by different brush types and strokes, the correct order of brush strokes, and so on. The first edition was published in Bunka 13 (1816). The advertisements in the back matter of this later (probably second) edition show that six other works in the same series were planned, each on a different theme (e.g. animals, people, plants and flowers). This particular volume teaches the reader how to paint fruits and vegetables, and provides example illustrations of a peach, persimmon, eggplant, radish, mushroom, and other produce. The highlight is the beautiful bokashi (gradation) printing used to express the brushstrokes.
One four-hole-bound (yotsumetoji) volume, complete, on double leaves, traditional East Asian binding style (fukurotoji). Original wrappers worn, creased, and with a few stains, lower a little mottled. Original daisen title slip present, somewhat scraped. Thumbing, occasional marks, and light soiling, browning, and creases to leaves. 2, 22 leaves. 25.3 x 18 cm.
