Natsu-matsuri Ikiji no Edokko [Summer Festival Spirit of the Edoites]

[Utagawa], Toyokuni [III] [illustrated by].

[Edo (Tōkyō)]: [Ōta] Takichi, [1858].

The rōnin Issun Tokubē (left) fights fishmonger (and accidental murderer) Danshichi Kurobē (right) in this dramatic scene from the kabuki Natsu Matsuri Naniwa Kagami illustrated by Utagawa Kunisada I (Toyokuni III) (1786–1864). The clean and handsome Issun is contrasted with the wild-haired and roguish Danshichi in the scene. The story ends happily, with the two becoming sworn brothers shortly after the fight. Danshichi's striking dragon tattoo and the various sea creatures that adorn his clothing are highlights of the diptych.

Two ōban leaves, complete. Trimming, light soiling, wear, and a few marks. Light fading to left extremity of right print. Each print measures approximately 36.4 x 24.5 cm.
