[Untitled album of tipped-in photographs of the San Francisco Japanese Tea Garden]
[Hagiwara, Gorō (compiled by?)].
[San Francisco, ca. 1930s].
An album containing sixteen large tipped-in monochrome photographs captured around the 1930s of the Japanese Tea Garden in San Francisco. The verso of the upper wrapper of the album bears the signature and seal of Hagiwara Gorō and the inscription (in Japanese): “Gifted to Mr. Ashizawa, March 1, Showa 11 [1936], San Francisco Golden Gate Park, Japanese Garden, Hagiwara Gorō”. Gorō was the son-in-law of landscape designer Hagiwara Makoto (1854-1925), who maintained and expanded the Japanese Garden until his death (and, incidentally, is credited with inventing the fortune cookie).
One album, complete. Original card wrappers browned, with chips to extremities. Several small tears and bumps to wrapper and leaf extremities, not impacting photographs. A few waves to album paper due to glue from photographs. Small loss to upper opening corner of lower wrapper. Minor sticker residue to lower wrapper verso. Spine dented. [Unpaginated]. 23.4 x 35.9 cm.
