Nankyoku Tanken Inuzori-tai: Futari no Ainu no Hanashi [Antarctic Expedition Dog Sled Team: The Story of Two Ainu People]

Koide, Shōgo [text by].

Tōkyō: Fuzanbō, Shōwa 20 [1945]. First edition.

The story of the two Ainu men, Yayomanekuh (Yamabe Yasunosuke, 1867-1923) and Sisratoka (Hanamori Shinkichi, b. 1875/1876- year of death unknown), who travelled as part of Shirase Nobu's crew to Antarctica. The two members were in charge of the team's dog sled, so it is unsurprising that the Karafuto dogs feature prominently in the text and illustrations. The author, Koide Shōgo, also produced a text titled The Tale of the Cat who Went to Antarctica.

One Western-bound volume, complete. Original wrappers faded, foxed, scraped, and lightly stained. Ex-ownership stamp to both wrappers. Small hole to upper margin of p. 19-28. Intermittent foxing and stains internally, not impacting legibility. Foxing to textblock edges. Ex-ownership stamp to lower free endpaper. 2, 285 p. 18.1 x 12.7 cm.
