A gōkan on the heroic exploits of Takagi Oriemon, a martial artist of the early Edo period and founder of the Takagi-ryū (Takagi Yōshin-ryū) school of jūtaijutsu. The story follows the heroic deeds of Takagi as he travels throughout Japan, engaging in matches with numerous renowned masters and demonstrating exceptional martial prowess. The title page advertises the set of three volumes as "newly cut" (from woodblocks).

 

Three four-hole-bound (yotsumetoji) volumes, complete, on double leaves, traditional East Asian binding style (fukurotoji). Original wrappers worn, thumbed, and with a few marks, ex-ownership inscriptions to lower wrappers. Upper wrapper of first volume faded. Ex-ownership inscriptions to title and lower pastedowns of v.1-2. Thumbing, a few marks, and light rubbing. Small continuous wormholes, repaired, to upper margins of all volumes. Housed in non-original custom folding case. 30 leaves (continuously paginated). 18 x 12.5 cm.
