Shinpan Katsura-tsuke [Stick-on Wigs, Newly Produced]

[Takeda], Ikumaru [illustrated by].

[Tōkyō]: To [Yamaguchiya Tōbē], [Meiji 4 (1871)].

A toy print (omocha-e) designed with cut-out wigs to be arranged interchangeably on the heads of the three kabuki actors depicted below. From left to right, the figures are captioned Kanjaku, Shikan, and Sanshō—likely referring to Nakamura Kanjaku, Nakamura Shikan, and Kawarazaki Sanshō. Each wig is captioned with the name of the role or character it represents, allowing for a variety of theatrical transformations. Among the wigs provided for Kanjaku and Shikan are coiffures for female roles, reflecting the onnagata tradition. A playful and well-preserved paper toy.

One ōban leaf, colour woodblock-printed on one side, complete. A few small wormholes to centre. Minor marks and wear. Light bumps to extremities. 37.1 x 24.8 cm.
