[Untitled album of calligraphy samples]
[Creator unidentified].
[Japan, ca. Meiji 13 (1880)]. In manuscript.
An album of tipped-in calligraphy samples prepared for books, advertisements, frames, seals, talismans, and related ephemera. Each example is neatly and professionally brushed on extremely thin paper, likely intended to be pasted onto woodblocks for cutting and later printing. Occasional corrections remain visible, providing a glimpse of the working process. On the versos of the accordion-folded leaves appear large kanji characters intended as copy for calligraphic practice. Altogether, the album constitutes a valuable record of the diverse calligraphic styles employed across different genres and media in Japan during the Meiji period.
One accordion-folding (gajōsō) volume, complete. Original boards worn, scraped at extremitie, with a few stains. Occasional wormholes, browning, and foxing internally. A few corrections in red ink present. Adjustments occasionally pasted over text. [Unpaginated]. 25 x 12.4 cm.
