Kikkō-shū [Album of Auspicious Light]
[Tatsumura, Heizō (illustrated by); Yosano, Akiko (poetry by)].
Kyōto: Takashimaya Gofukuten, [preface dated Shōwa 4 (1929)].
A fascinating intersection between poetry, art, and fabrics, this unusual work records 35 obi designs by textile artist Tatsumura Heizō paired with poems by famous poet Yosano Akiko. Heizō and Yosano reportedly met at a textile art exhibition held in Osaka in 1919 and developed a close friendship. They created this catalogue together for the first exhibition (titled "Hundred Delights of Koetsu") of the Kikkō-kai, which was held at Takashimaya (at the time a kimono shop, not a major department store). A wonderful record of a collaboration between an influential poet and a major textile designer, filled with photographic illustrations of designs inspired by famous artist Hon'ami Kōetsu. Although the volume is subtitled "volume 1", no later volumes were traced in major Japanese library databases.
One Western-bound volume, complete. Original wrappers worn, soiled, and stained. Spine chipped. Binding and leaves waved. Browning, offsetting, and foxing internally. Stamp to upper pastedown. [Unpaginated]. 49.4 x 16.6 cm.
