Fūryū Waka Sannin: Migi [Three Fashionable Young People: Right]
Kikukawa, Eizan [illustrated by].
[Edo (Tōkyō): Yamatoya Jūbē, ca. Bunka 9-11 (1812–1814)].
A sophisticated woman sits absorbed in a Hyakunin Isshu or Sanjūrokkasen book, her coat casually draped over a hanging rack beside her. In a quiet moment between tasks, she pauses to immerse herself in literary pursuits. This ōban print is the right-hand sheet of a triptych by the ukiyo-e artist Kikukawa Eizan (1787-1867). The MFA notes that the triptych's title plays on the term for the Three Gods of Waka Poetry (Waka sanjin). Delicate karazuri (blind-embossed) patterns on the kimono provide a subtle highlight.
One ōban leaf, colour woodblock-printed on one side, complete. Pigments faded. Browning, slight creases, and a few small wormholes. 38.9 x 24.6 cm.
