[Zuan Fukusa Awase (Design Combinations for Fukusa)]
Kajita, Hanko, Kawabata, Gyokushō ... [et al.] [illustrated by]; [Nagai, Sogaku, Kubota, Beisen (edited by)].
[Tōkyō: Ōkura Shōten, Meiji 27 (1894)].
A curated album of colour woodblock-printed designs for tea ceremony fukusa, assembled from two volumes of Zuan fukusa awase. In the tea ceremony, a fukusa is a silk cloth worn at the waist and used by the host to ritually cleanse utensils such as the tea scoop; it is distinct from the gift-wrapping cloth of the same name, which employs a different kanji. This composite volume brings together material from volume one (originally comprising 17 double-page spreads) and volume two (19 spreads), here preserving 25 double-page designs from a total of 36. Despite its title, the work was likely conceived not solely as a sourcebook for fukusa, but as a broader pattern compendium for application across the decorative arts, including dyeing and lacquerwork. The album offers a compelling glimpse into a transitional moment in Japanese visual culture, when the boundaries between fine art and design were beginning to take on more distinct form.
One accordion-folding (orijō) volume, in non-original boards. Extremities worn and chipped. Occasional creases and tears to gutters. Slight browning and occasional marks internally. One very small wormhole to margins of last few leaves. [Unpaginated]. 24.3 x 16 cm.
