Chiyo no Nishiki [Brocades of a Thousand Generations]
Taguchi, Bairei [illustrated by].
Kyōto: Toyamadō, Meiji 33 [1900].
Volume one (of two) of this colour woodblock-printed zuan series by Taguchi Bairei, a Kyoto-based nihonga painter active in both fine and applied arts. The volume features twenty-five creative designs, many of which use metallic pigments, for the back panels of men's haori. Auspicious symbols including cranes, sunrises, turtles, boats, and Mt. Fuji appear alongside playful and humorous motifs. The inclusion of topical imagery such as a depiction of a modern Japanese warship may reflect the immediate cultural impact of Japan's involvement in the Boxer Rebellion. An inventive blend of tradition, wit, and contemporaneity in haori design.
Volume one of a total of two four-hole-bound (yotsumetoji) volumes, on double leaves, traditional East Asian binding style (fukurotoji). Original wrappers worn, scraped, and soiled. Ex-bookseller's price sticker to lower wrapper. Slight oxidisation to metallic pigments. Marks, light foxing, and browning internally. Occasional tears and small losses to tissue guards. A few stains and minor loss to upper pastedown. [Unpaginated]. 23.2 x 32.4 cm.
