[Untitled oil painting]
Broadhurst, Florence [painted by].
[Australia, ca. 1920-50s?].
A signed oil painting by Australian artist Florence Broadhurst (1899-1977) of the "red sand-stone hills near Alice Springs", accompanied by a letter from the artist to a Japanese man (Mr. Kawasaki) who had ordered the painting in Brisbane. Broadhurst visited (and may have worked as a performer in) Japan in the 1920s, and many of the patterns she created in the following years were inspired by Japanese art and design. The letter accompanying the painting bears the printed sender's address "7 Beverley Towers, Victoria Parade, Manly" and is dated 1954 (Broadhurst moved to Manly in 1949). The famous artist and socialite was murdered in October of 1977 (the murder remains unsolved).
Mounted oil painting accompanied by a single-leaf handwritten letter. Some chips and discolouration to wooden frame and fabric mounting. Frame measures 44 x 55.7 cm; painting measures 26.5 x 38.8 cm.
