Matsui Tōshū Sensei Gashū [Collection of Illustrations by Master Matsui Tōshū]
Matsui, Tōshū [illustrated by].
[Japan], Taishō 5 [1916]. In manuscript.
An accordion-folding album containing twelve double-page paintings attributed to the artist and designer Matsui Tōshū, each bearing his seal, with the final painting signed and dated. Tōshū is best known for his woodblock-printed zuan books Nishikikata (1901–1902) and Yūki Gajō (1901), both published by Honda Unkindō. The present work, however, reveals a more elegant and restrained aspect of his art. Its subjects include animals, figures, and landscapes, executed with stylistic elements drawn from both the Nanga and Rinpa traditions. An inscription on the verso of the final leaf includes a date together with a signature reading "Ryōshō Family".
One accordion-folding (gajōsō) volume, complete. Original boards a little worn and discoloured at extremities. Manuscript daisen title slip to upper board. A few small marks internally. Slight offsetting from red seals. Leaves a little warped. Minor discolouration to extremities. [Unpaginated]. 24 x 18 cm.
