Compositions, Couleurs, Idées

Delaunay, Sonia [illustrated by].

Paris: Editions d'art Charles Moreau, [1930?].

The complete set of forty pochoir-coloured plates by Sonia Delaunay, issued as a portfolio of designs for textiles, wallpapers, and other decorative applications. One of the central figures of the Parisian avant-garde, Delaunay played a pivotal role in the development of abstract art and, together with her husband Robert Delaunay and contemporaries such as František Kupka, helped pioneer the movement known as Orphism. Throughout her career, she explored the visual effects created by contrasting and juxtaposed colours, a principle she and Robert Delaunay termed "Simultanism". Compositions, Couleurs, Idées represents one of the most ambitious expressions of these ideas in print. Created as designs for textiles, wallpapers, and related decorative arts, the forty plates document Delaunay's sustained exploration of colour relationships. Their abstract geometric patterns reflect the principles of Simultanism, while the pochoir process reproduces the designs with remarkable vibrancy. A scarce complete example of this important portfolio.

One set containing one folded preliminary leaf (4 pp.) and 40 colour pochoir plates, loose as issued in the original portfolio with silk ties intact. Upper portfolio board lettered in black and decorated after a Delaunay design. Portfolio worn, marked, and browned, spine frayed. Browning to plate extremities and occasional marks, primarily to margins. Ownership stamp of Seikōsha (possibly the watch company) to upper board verso, page facing the title, and versos of all plates. Several designs lightly circled in pencil. [1 folded preliminary leaf (i.e. 4 pp.)] + 40 pl. Portfolio measures 33.4 x 25.3 cm. Plates measure 32.4 x 24.5 cm. Text in French.
