Misei Gashū [Collection of Illustrations by Misei]
[Kosugi], Misei [illustrated by].
[Japan, ca. 1908?]. In manuscript.
A manuscript collection of illustrations by Kosugi Misei (1881–1964), also known as Kosugi Hōan. Although titled Misei Gashū, portions of the manuscript correspond closely to sections published in Misei's Manga to Kikō (Hakubunkan, 1909), including Jōmō no Aki and Izu Ekotoba. Manga to Kikō, a travel record combining text and often humorous sketches, is among Misei's best-known manga publications. The close correspondence between the present manuscript and the printed book suggests a direct relationship between the two. Although the possibility that the manuscript was copied from the published edition cannot be entirely excluded, it seems more likely to represent preparatory material. Whether or not this is the case, the work presents a diverse collection of sketches drawn from Misei's travels. Included are scenes of everyday life in late Meiji Japan, depictions of newly introduced pastimes and technologies such as baseball and steam trains, humorous depictions of human folly, landscapes, and occasional fantastical scenes involving spirits and legendary creatures. Together, they document both the Meiji era Japan Misei encountered and the one he created on the page.
