[Bijin no Kaisuiyoku (A Beautiful Woman at the Beach)]
[Terasaki], Kōgyō [illustrated by].
[Japan: publisher unidentified, ca. mid Shōwa period (1950s-1970s)?].
A woman enjoys a sunny day out at the beach in this woodblock print after a design by Terasaki Kōgyō (1866–1919). The original image appeared as a kuchi-e (frontispiece) in Bungei Kurabu magazine in 1903; this skillfully executed reproduction was likely produced in the mid-Shōwa period, after the design had become a well-known example of the kuchi-e genre. The woman's straw hat and striped swimsuit reflect the adoption of Western fashions in early twentieth-century Japan, while her long, loose hair recalls the celebrated images of abalone divers (ama) found in the works of Utamaro and other ukiyo-e artists. A skilled reproduction of a design that combines a traditional bijin motif with a distinctly modern setting.
One ōban tate-e, woodblock-printed on one side, complete. Very minor browning and foxing to paper. Light crease to lower margin. 41 x 27.1 cm.
