Atago-yama no Zu [Illustration of Atago Hill]

Kobayashi, Kiyochika [illustrated by].

[Japan: publisher unidentified, ca. Meiji 11 (1878)].

An early example of a kōsen-ga (light-ray picture) by Kobayashi Kiyochika (1847-1915), this view from the summit of Atago Hill looks out across Tokyo toward the bay. In the foreground, a man in Western dress sits smoking a pipe, a subtle reminder of the changing appearance of Meiji-period Japan. Houses and trees recede into the distance, while ships appear to float above them on light itself. The composition is distinguished by Kiyochika's careful use of light and shadow, particularly in the sharply defined shadows cast by the chickens and rooftop. An eye-catching work by one of the most innovative print designers of the Meiji period.

One ōban yoko-e, woodblock-printed on one side, complete. Paper a little browned and trimmed. Light creases to upper left corner. Two washi tabs affixed to verso. 24.5 x 35.3 cm.
