The first authorised English translation of the Communist ManifestoManifesto of the Communist Party
Manifesto of the Communist Party
Marx, Karl, Engels, Frederick [text by].
London: William Reeves, [1927]. "6th impression".
The so-called "sixth impression" of the first authorised English translation of the Communist Manifesto. Although the upper wrapper is dated 1888 and describes the work as a sixth impression, bibliographical research suggests that the present issue was in fact printed much later, probably in 1927, from plates originally prepared for the first English edition published by Reeves in 1888. Rendered into English by Samuel Moore, the translator of Marx's Capital, the Reeves publication was the only English-language edition of the Manifesto personally edited and annotated by Friedrich Engels. In addition to revising the translation, Engels supplied a substantial preface and a series of explanatory notes. As a result, the Reeves edition occupies a particularly important place in the publication history of Marx and Engels' most influential work.
